Laser treatments are an easy to manage and simple way of giving a new life to your skin. It helps to resurface your skin and also helps with problems of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, uneven skin tone, wrinkles and fine lines, and more. It’s all good but how do you actually prepare for laser skin treatment?
In a perfect world, you would wake up and reach your doctor’s clinic to get the treatment done. But unfortunately, that’s not the case. You will have to prepare yourself and the skin before showing up in the clinic. Generally, most of the preparation information will be provided by your laser skin treatment clinic, but having some knowledge beforehand is not a bad idea at all.
Here are some ways through which you can prepare for your next laser skin treatment-
Provide Your Medication History
When you first arrive for the treatment, you will have to provide your complete medical history. This is necessary as laser treatments are not recommended for certain medications and medical conditions. If you develop cold sores then it is recommended to use some form of anti-viral medication. Or if you have any other medical conditions, including allergies, you should consult the doctor before the treatment begins.
Avoid the Sun
Try to avoid the sun and its harshness both before and after getting the treatment. You should start wearing plenty of sun protection, including sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and also use hats, caps and full sleeve clothing.
You should start protecting yourself from the UV rays 2 weeks prior. Also, avoid going for a treatment when you are having sunburn or a tan. Even after the session, the doctor will guide how to avoid the sun for the recovery days.
Pause You Usual Skin Care Routine
Before and after the laser treatment session, you will have to pause your usual skincare and touch routine. Laser removal does not play well with skin care creams and you will have to have a clean skin with nothing on it.
The doctor will recommend you a specific routine that you will have to follow instead of your regular products. There will be special creams or lotions that will be recommended based on your skin type.
Stop Thinning Your Blood
Some medications like aspirin, vitamin E, and ibuprofen should be avoided, as they cause excess thinning of the blood. The thinning will affect your natural recovery and unnecessarily stretch the recovery period. This should be started at least two weeks prior to the treatment.
You should also stop smoking before the treatment. Smoking dries out the skin and causes the procedure to be less effective. It also prolongs the healing process. And ironically, it actually causes more wrinkles.
Keep the Skin Clean
When you arrive for the treatment, be there without any lotion, cream, perfume or makeup. Laser treatment works best on the natural skin. You should only use creams or lotion recommended by the clinic.
